Main Ideas
- More and more beaches are being contaminated by disease-causing microorganisms
- These microorganisms are a direct indicator of the presence of animal and human wastes
- In 2004, there were 19,950 days of beach closures
- The reason for 85% of these closures was the presence of fecal bacteria
- Fecal bacteria can cause liver disease, respiratory infections, and potentially fatal gastrointestinal disorders
- This type of contamination is typical in many impoverished countries
- In the United States, it is a sign of environmentally-foolish growth
- The lack of porous surfaces in our cities has led to increased runoff
- This runoff, which carries animal wastes, easily makes its way to the oceans through storm drains
- By definition, the contamination of beaches will make them unsuitable for any kind of recreational acitivity
- Exposure to the contaminated water can lead to many infections (even some that induce paralysis)
- Fecal bacteria have recently led to some of the worst infections in post-industrial societies

. The lack of permeable surfaces in urban areas allows runoff carrying animal waste to easily make its way into the ocean through storm drains. There are many ways to prevent this contaminated runoff from making its way to the ocean. One way is to treat storm drain water in a manner similar to sewage treatment. Another way is to incorporate permeable surfaces in city streets and sidewalks, which would absorb runoff.

My Reflection |
That's just gross.People really need to start picking after themselves People come if you do not wanna get sick then do not litter. Pick after yourselves and your pets . It's logic you do not wanna see the beaches dirty then do not litter. Every piece of trash counts so throw at away. You might think its just a wrapper and not pick up but that wrapper will end in the ocean and some fish will eat. You will eat the fish that ate that wrapper. So pick the wrapper up because it might end in your stomach and then you will get sick for eating your wrapper that you didn't bother picking up. Pick up your trash tell others to pick their trash too. Its a matter of respecting your environment and being conscience that you can impact your environment in positive ways and negative ways as well.
