SummaryRachel Carson was a scientist who spoke out about the harmful ways pesticides can effect humans. While she was writing Silent Spring, she experienced some family tragedies. But she was determined to finish the book. She saw the problems that harmful pesticides cause to human health: "She argued that synthetic pesticides like DDT and heptachlor were being applied in profligate quantities without regard to their effect on human health, animals and the environment"(Koehn). Even when she was diagnosed with cancer, she continued writing the book. She had the charisma and aggressiveness that good leaders possess. She had evidence to back up her claims, which was another reason that the book took a long time to publish. Carson was not afraid of the companies that rejected her claims. Her book inspired the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency.

My Reflection |
Rachel Carson is a brave woman who pushed past her own personal obstacles to inform the people about the threats pesticides pose to human health. This woman wrote a book that changed an entire nation! This woman was the reason why the government created the Environmental Protection Agency. Activists like Carson are important, because while they can be aggressive, we all want to have a green clean planet. However, some people are greedy and this was illustrated by businessmen that rejected Carson's claim about DDT and other pesticide uses. They dislike it and rejected it because it was simply not good for business! Business people that only think about making money make me so sad because if they don't think about the environment there eventually won't be any resources left to use for making their products. I will be reading Silent Spring on my free time , but even if I don't read it I will still recommend it.
