List of Major Ideas
- 71% of Earth is covered by water
- Life started in the ocean, and still has more species than on land
- Water absorbs light differently than air
- Oxygen enters only at or near the surface
- The ocean does not contain much plant life, because concentrations of critical nutrients are lower than they are on land
- Phytoplankton are seasonal and vary by region.
- Most saltwater plants grow fast and die young—unlike trees, which live to a ripe old age
- The ocean does not contain much plant life, because concentrations of critical nutrients are lower than they are on land.
- It is this cold, heavy water that is the key to the food chain. Because it receives a constant rain of organic detritus from above, deep, chilly water is richly supplied with nutrients.
- In certain places such as coasts, where steady winds blow the warm surface waters offshore, deep waters rise to take their place.
- The ocean is often most oxygen depleted at intermediate depths.
- Weather patterns and seasonal variations also influence the makeup of the inter tidal zone.
- Temperate areas have the most developed inter tidal communities because summer fogs often protect creatures from direct sunlight. In contrast, rocky shores in the tropics are usually quite bare—consisting of a few diatoms, coral line red algae, cyanobacteria, chitons and nerites
- Offshore sit the “rain forests” of the marine world: kelp beds and coral reefs.
Author's Main Idea The authors are showing that marine ecosystems in the ocean are being overlook and overuse.Earth is seventy-one percent of seawater and they have a huge impact in the human race, while we overuse their ecosystems we have ignore the side effects we have made. The main point of this article is to inform people about the ocean. What resides in the deep ocean waters is still a mystery to scientist. But the things researchers have discovered is that marine ecosystems have a huge biodiversity, But they are not give much attention, less than one percent of the ocean floor has been explored and less than ten percent of the open surface ocean has been studied. Terrestrial ecosystems and we are well aware of huge role they play in our life but we need to realize that marine ecosystems are as important if not more important to save the planet from contaminated from harmful toxins and chemicals.
The authors want the public to know that marine ecosystems are crucial to the ocean and to us. That exploiting the ocean resources have an effect in marine ecosystems , over-fishing is and example of exploiting the ocean resource. The deep ocean waters and their ecosystems within it, they remain mysteries. |
