Main Ideas
- Hydraulic fracturing or simply known as "fracking is a controversial topic
- Many scientists are now speaking out against the process
- Numerous studies have proven that fracking is extremely harmful to the local environment
- In some cases, groundwater becomes completely contaminated with fracking byproducts
- Fracking is on the rise in the United States, especially after the discovery of more than 827 trillion cubic feet of natural gas trapped in shale rock
- To some, fracking is the solution that will guarantee energy security in the United States for generations to come
- Although this may be true, fracking is far from ideal
- Despite what natural gas companies claim, fracking is a messy process
- Fracking fluid (produced during the hydraulic fracturing process) is highly toxic
- Despite this massive water pollution potential, fracking companies are exempt from the Clean Water Act, as well as other regulations
- Fracking companies try to avoid any blame by claiming that fracking itself doesn't cause drinking water contamination
- However, this is just a semantics argument: fracking is impossible without drilling
- Without much ground (regulation) to stand on, the EPA can do very little (and is doing very little) to stop contamination
- Before much can be done to stop or validate fracking, more data has to be collected.
- Fracturing a deep shale layer one time to release natural gas might pose little risk to drinking-water supplies, but doing so repeatedly could be problematic
Author's Main Idea |
With the relatively recent discovery of natural gas deposits in the United States, hydraulic fracturing is increasing. Also known as "fracking", hydraulic fracturing is used to extract natural gas from shale. Although fracking companies claim that it is a safe process, there is a wealth of evidence that says otherwise. In particular, fracking fluid (produced during the process of fracking) is especially harmful. The fluid is known to contain many toxins (including some carcinogens), and has contaminated the drinking water supplies of many. Unfortunately, not much can be done to stop fracking. Hydraulic fracturing activities are exempt from many major environmental regulations. Before the government can step in, more research must be done.

My Reflection |
Fracking a different method to obtain fuel. Natural gases are being extracted by hydraulic fracturing.People are being affected by this their water is being containment with chemicals that are being use to extracted this natural gases. Once again the people who are trying to find fuel are doing wrong. The sun will last for two billion years why can't we use it? Because we are being dumb and not thinking smart. There many ways our government has fails us and this one of the many things they lie about that fracking is not contributing to global warming. It just sad that something like people getting sick and dying for the government to do something,
