SUMMARY The fashion industry is worth a billion dollars but its footprint is worth more than that. Many known brands such as Victoria Secret, Zara and Levi's release many toxic chemicals into the ocean. In the video it says that "in China alone, 320 million people are without access to clean drinking water 40% of the surface water is consider polluted and a staggering 20% of the groundwater used as urban water is contaminated" But China is not the only country that is suffering.
Indonesia is another country suffering in the name of fashion. In Indonesia textile facilities release pH14 water and hormone-disrupting chemicals into local waters. The process of making these clothes is harmful to the environment by dumping toxic chemicals into local water and the ocean. The clothes themselves also contain harmful chemicals that are released back into the ocean, lakes and rivers. But not to worry: over half a million people have taken action by demanding big brands including Zara,Levi's and Victoria's Secret to adopt more environmentally friendly manufacturing methods. |
