Main Ideas
- Product packaging is often overlooked, but it accounts for a significant amount of waste
- Manufacturers may be reluctant to change their products packaging, but a long-term reduce in production costs may prove to be a lucrative benefit
- Reducing excessive packaging doesn't just minimize raw material use: by reducing product weight, less emissions are released as the product is transported
- In Japan, strict regulations of packaging production and disposal have led to a "greener" consumer demographic
- Other countries, such as Taiwan, have also put regulation into effect that limits packaging based on mass, size, or amount of layers
- Regulation alone will not solve the problem of excessive product packaging; instead, all parties involved in the process must reach an agreement on objectives
- Financial incentives (such as subsidies) may kickstart a shift to less product packaging better than the threat of fines
- Consumers can also pressure companies into making the environmentally responsible changes
- Some packaging designers agree with the notion that packaging today is excessive
- These designers suggest using simple yet bold packaging to convey a company's message
- Designers could even incorporate data into their decisions that would reveal which types of packaging are disposed of immediately.
Author's Main idea |
Product packaging is a large source of waste. Until recently, manufacturers have been reluctant to do so. However, even though there is an initial cost to reducing packaging, manufacturers will save money in the long run. If they reduce their packaging, they will end up using less materials. Japan, as well as many other countries, have passed laws that regulate the amount of packaging that is allowed on products. But regulation is not enough to solve the problem of excessive product packaging. Companies and packaging designers must also collaborate to produce packaging that is environmentally-friendly.

My Reflection |
Let's ban fast food places that are not friendly to our environment. When they are using too much packaging they are polluting and are using more natural resources than they should be. Everytime we eat fast food we are adding more waste into the environment because of the excessive packaging. The solution is very simple stop going to fast food places and buying things that are package so heavily. We live in a materialistic world where we buy more things than we will ever use. Not only are we depleting natural resources we are also polluting our environment with the excessive waste.
